Underground Everywhere.

It seems I am photographing more and more underground these days, and I’m not complaining at all. I love it. I love everything about it. Maybe it’s because in high-school I took homec and typing instead shop (although typing and cooking did get me some good gigs and some great dates hahahaha) and combining my love of photography with heavy machinery is something that is always exciting to me. I look forward to exploring more underground communities in the next year in which I call the “Age Of The Commercial Gigs” with James Hodgins Photography.

Electric Vehicles Are Underground Too!

Today I had the task (and many others) of capturing an image of the Kiruna truck while it makes it’s pass through the tunnels underground. This vehicle is HUGE (I was about as tall as the front tire) and although it’s size is something formidable, the noise from this machine is very minimal. That’s because the Kiruna truck is an electric underground truck powered by two heavy duty traction motors – one for each axle. The collector arm and the overhead power supply line have been specially developed to withstand rough mining conditions.

Heading underground again tomorrow (and looking forward to it). Should be some interesting photos including the awesome Kiruna Electric Trolly. I somehow have to capture this huge beast while it’s moving so we do not slow down production. I will keep you posted on my success rate.

The vehicle I get to photograph next week makes this one look like a sandbox toy, but don’t let the size fool you, the driver of this scoop knew his stuff and could park this baby on a dime.

Mud, Sweat & More Gears

Ever been underground? It’s a whole different world down there, very dark, very muddy, and your camera equipment sure takes a mud kicking. Me? I love it.
