Centis Tile Sudbury

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

Photographing or looking at  tile on it’s own can be quite challenging and if anything boring, but when you get the chance to photograph the tile in it’s environment you get the big “picture”.  Here are a few images that I photographed for Centis Tile in Sudbury via TTC Creative including the New Hospital, New Sudbury Shopping Center, Laurentian University, various homes and the Lake House Restaurant.

Sailing To Shoveling In 24 Hours

Friday, July 30th, 2010

I completely forgot about this and while I was on  facebook just now I came across the post with my article.  A few years ago we chartered the Catamaran “Mustang Sally” to sail the British Virgin Islands and do some snorkeling and diving.  We had a great experience with our hosts Doug & Wendy and to thank them I wrote an article about our experience that was published in BVI Yacht Guide Magazine.  You can read the article here “Sailing to shoveling in 24 hours” and if you are interested in a very unique vacation, check out the Mustang Sally.

I am not a “Wedding Photographer”

Monday, May 10th, 2010

It’s been a couple of months since our cross Canada Road Show and I am delighted that I am still receiving emails from the attendees.  Several emails were concerning my reply to a question from our Calgary Event as we were on the topic of websites, galleries and social media.  The question was whether or not to have separate websites for each “niche” of photography.  So one website for weddings & portraits, another for commercial, another for glamor etc so that you present to your clients that you “specialize” in this type of photography.  Personally I prefer to have all my photography on my one site (as I do) and one response was “but wouldn’t a potential client look at someones photography site that only has wedding photography on it and think this photographer “specializes” in wedding photography while this photographer does weddings, portraits, commercial, pets and so on.  The perception being that you are a “General” photographer where as the other photographer focuses on wedding photography thus he/she is more suited for weddings.

My response was… “I am a photographer, I do it all.  If they go to my site they will not only see my wedding photography, but also see that I am pretty darn good at commercial, pet’s, babies, kids, maternity and anything else I attempt to photograph.  My skills as a photographer bleed into anything that I wish to photograph.”  I am not a “wedding photographer” I am a photographer.

Show Me The Fire & Dog Day #4

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Here is an image I created today for the Cambrian College Fire Services department.  Sometime this summer we will be heading outdoors to get some live fire images, but today (as it was cold) we settled for indoors.  I lit this image with 4 lights and one flash using a collapsed umbrella and 30 inch softbox.  This shoot gave me some great ideas for upcoming images for this years Sudbury Firefighters Calendar.  I look forward creating more images for this Cambrian Department.

Ice Hot

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

Yesterday I spoke to the graphic design students at Cambrian College.  The presentation was to show the class a “live” product shot (which is something I don’t do often).    On went the thinking cap and I came up with this idea for a diamond drill bit.  I had this glass bowl with fake icecubes that had a “fog” unit in it that I bought from freskew farms last fall.  I placed the bowl inside my 7 inch reflector of my whitelighting monolight, getting the light from the bottom shining up through the cubes.  I added a background light with a blue gel, and a small pinlight with a homemade snoot for a kicker.  I then had my assistant blow into the bowl with a straw to get the fog coming up through the hole.  We had to work fast, because before the presentation started, I dropped a cube in the bowl cracking the whole thing.  It didn’t take long for the water to find its way onto my lights. :)

Back To College

Friday, November 28th, 2008

I was in College Boreal  yesterday for another shoot and they had over 20 banners displayed with images I have shot over the past few years.    It was pretty cool to see my images represented in this fashion.
