When you get that sparkle in the eyes….

I LOVE big o’l catchlights in my subjects eyes, especially babies and kids. They eyes are the key to a great portrait. If you have no light in the eyes and the eyes look dull then you get a dull portrait. I see alot of studio and outdoor photographers just not grasping this concept and some of them have been in the industry for years. Now I am not perfect and not ALL my subjects get the big o’l catchlights, but we really do try our best, especially in the studio where your lighting is controlled. I LOVE creating portraits like the below image. Simple. Well light. Cute subject. Proper exposure and a great expression. Everything a parent would want in a portrait of their child.

Natural Light Babies Are The Best

Having discussions on Natural light photography on our NoBs Blog and Forum I am always reminded just how beautiful natural light can be. Off Camera Flash is fine and dandy for “some” photographs if the type of portrait created can benefit from OCF (this is something I see too many photographers using just for the sake of using it, and the photographs are not what they could be).

I headed back out to my cottage yesterday to photograph my other cousins little one Sadie. We photographed Sadie last August in our Studio using lights and softboxes but yesterday I did not have that equipment with me, all I had was my camera and lens and therefore opted to use natural light. Now with natural light you can’t just expect to place your subject anywhere and have flattering light. You need to “find” the light, know the quality, the direction and where to put your subject so that the subject can benefit from that light.

The below image was created using some open shade that was created with a bank of trees behind Sadie. Lighting was coming across the tops of the trees but giving a soft even light in the spot where I wanted to photograph. She was sitting on the side of a small fountain which had a very light bottom, reflecting light back up into my subject acting as a natural reflector. Sometimes Natural light is the easiest light to use, but it does require some technical thought to get the most out of it.

A Mothers Love

I just finished prepping images from this session and I wanted to post another image of Sarah and Reese. I love to see the interaction between our clients and their children, there is just something so unconditional about it.

Unlike me niece Piper. Yesterday we had the beautiful Reese come into our studio with mom and dad. She was just full of smiles and you just couldn’t go wrong with those big brown eyes like hers. She was a doll to photograph and she seemed pretty comfortable in front of the camera. She was so interested in what was going on around us but her eyes would always lock onto mom or dad’s face. Thanks again Sarah & Derek. It was a pleasure photographing the two of you and your beautiful daughter.

She flipped me off twice and peed on my couch!

Sometimes our clients just don’t love us and they don’t hold back letting us know. Piper was no exception, she just just didn’t want to be in the studio, nor did she want me to take her photo. It was her first time in the studio so it did take a bit of getting used to, but after I worked my charm on her (just like I did with Joce haha) I won her over and she posed like the little princess she is. It was all a ruse. She made me think I was in the free and clear as we put her on the couch and I immediately knew we fell into her trap. In the end I had the last laugh as the studio couch was Scotch Guarded a long time ago bwahahahaha and when Piper get’s older Uncle James will bring forth these images and this story to the first boyfriend she brings by to meet us.

Proud parents Natalie & Neil brought their new daughter “Tiia” into the studio yesterday. You might remember them from such shoots as “Our wedding”, “Our Maternity Session”, “Our Baby Session”, “Our Family Session” and “Our 2nd Maternity Session”. We look forward to the next family session with the most recent addition.
