When the Caribbean Freezes Over

That is pretty well what it feels like today. COLD!! Who would have thought that we would be wearing long pants, shirts and a jacket in the caribbean? It was too cold to sit on the beach, and to boring to sit inside, so we headed into town to taste some local cuisine. Not the high falooten fancy smanch restaurants, but the good o’l ma and pa shops. Of course on the way there we broke out our Canon G11’s and continued on with our crapshoots.

Adventures In Ambergris Caye

Well it has been a pretty sweet 48 hours. Despite the clouds yesterday we all had a pretty relaxing day. I spent the morning just lazying around on the couch reading my book, then went into town to hire a fishing guide for the afternoon. I spent several hours fishing around the island and trying to locate the elusive bone fish. Unfortunately it was soooooo window that fishing was pretty well the one thing I should not have been doing, but hey, what else are you going to do on a sunless cloudy day?

Today the sun peaked it’s head out for a few hours and we took full advantage of it. We drove our pimpcart into town and walked around with our Canon G11’s for a NoBs Crapshoot. At 1:00 we headed out into the ocean for our 5th dive and the ladies went snorkeling above us. Just as we were leaving the dock we spotted 2 dolphins not 50 feet from us. Andy (our guide) brought us right up to them as they were only in a few feet of water. It was amazing to be this close to them…..but I wanted to get closer. So I saddled up with my gear and jumped in the ocean beside them. They swam right up to me clicking and squeeking and swam around me for several minutes. Here is a some video I took of the two fornicating dolphins.

Visibility was great and there were plenty of new things to see. Of course Murphy showed up and brought the gavel down on the law. At the same time, both mine and Rob’s battery died in our cameras (doh! Never thought of checking that) and wouldn’t you know it, just over the next coral mound a HUGE ray appears, and then right after that a rare Lion Fish (WOW, GOOGLE THIS FISH). It would have looked great on my wall (the image that is). Tomorrow I will bring both batteries on the boat. We have a 9:00 dive scheduled, and the afternoon is up in the air. I will try to book a Tarpon Fishing session Sunday or Monday morning before I leave.

WE ALL SCREAM ICE CREAM!

You know, I think are wives have finally realized that Rob and I are not normal when it comes to our photography (in general, they have realized that a long long time ago). We are still giddy like kids in an ice cream store with our new G11 Point and shoot Cameras. It’s amazing what you can do with your camera and 2 small flashes. Here in Ambergris Caye, opportunity knocks everywhere for us to pull out the small guns.

The Fish Whisperer Will Strike Again.

Well today was another great day. The sun was out, it was a “LITTLE” warmer and of course we went diving again. This time though I was armed with my camera. Hit a great reef dive, and then after that we went snorkeling to Shark Ray Alley with loads of nurse sharks and rays. I just inquired about the fishing on this island and I have 3 choices. Reef, Deep and Flats. Well reef will be barracuda (which I have caught), deep will be grouper, jacks and mahimahi (which I have done) and Flats will be bone fish (something I have never done). So guess what, I will be bonefishing on the flats on the other side of the island someday this week. I just have to figure which one, and if I want bring Rob with me (the Anti Fish Whisperer. Oh yea, our other peice of luggage arrived today and Joce’s eyes have turned back to the beautiful green color, which is much more pleasing than the Satan Red.

It’s Another World Down There

We are getting really excited for our diving trip to Belize next month. Ever since I became a certified diver with SSI (www.divessi.com) I relish in the chance to dive in the Caribbean Ocean. Once you submerge below the surface you are faced with another world and you forget about the world above. It’s so peaceful and calm. Every chance I get I try to capture something new with my underwater camera (Now it is my Canon G11 with underwater housing) and I know I will have loads of opportunity in Belize as it has the second largest reef in the world (the first is Australia’s Great Barrier Reef).
